postheadericon Marketing Concept

The marketing concept has a philosophical background that leads to the directors of companies for the best path: Meeting the needs of your target market as the best option for long-term benefits.

However, what is the concept of marketing ? .

To answer this crucial question, nothing better than going to the ideas and concepts provided by recognized experts in marketing, as Kotler, Stanton, McCarthy, Perrault, Armstrong, Etzel and Walker, and then, get a report that encompasses the most important.

The Marketing Concept :
For Philip Kotler and Gary Armstrong, author of “Fundamentals of Marketing, the marketing concept is “a marketing management philosophy whereby the achievement of organizational goals depends on determining the needs and desires target markets and satisfaction of desires more effectively and efficiently than competitors ” [1].
Within this context, it is necessary to consider the difference between the concept of selling and marketing concept. In this respect, both authors, Kotler and Armstrong, mention that the concept of selling “takes a view from the inside out. (Thus) the starting point is the factory and requires a lot of sales and marketing for profitable sales [ 1]. For its part, the marketing concept “takes a view from outside to inside. (Thus) the starting point is a well-defined market and the focus is on customer needs. Thus, under the concept of marketing orientation to the customer and the value is the path that leads to sales and profits ” [1].

Another thing to consider, as both authors, is that “many companies claim to practice the marketing concept but do not. They have the forms of marketing, as a vice president of marketing, product managers, marketing plans and market research, but this does not mean that companies are focused towards the market and customer driven ” [1].
Finally, both authors warn that “the implementation of the concept of marketing often involves more than simply respond to the wishes expressed by customers and their needs are obvious. In many cases, customers do not know what they want or do not even know what is possible . Such situations require a customer-driven marketing (ie), understanding customer needs better than the customers themselves and create products and services that meet today’s existing and latent needs and future ” [1].

For his part, Stanton, Etzel and Walker, author of the book “Fundamentals of Marketing” , explains that the concept of marketing “emphasizes customer orientation and coordination of marketing activities to achieve performance targets organization ” [2].
In this sense, and opinion of the authors, “the marketing concept is based on three ideas :

All planning and operations should be directed to the customer. That is, each department and employee must apply to the satisfaction of customer needs.
All marketing activities of an organization must be coordinated. This means that the efforts of marketing (product planning, pricing, distribution and promotion) should be designed and combined in a coherent, consistent, and that an executive must have the authority and total responsibility for the complete set of marketing activities.
Coordinated marketing, customer-oriented, it is essential to achieve the performance objectives of the organization. The business performance is generally measured in terms of ROI, stock price and market capitalization. However, the immediate goal might be something less ambitious to move the organization closer to its ultimate goal ” [2].

An interesting observation made ??by authors, Stanton, Walker and Etzel is that “sometimes, the marketing concept simply stated as customer orientation, but with everything that is important to emphasize a customer focus should not substitute for the achievement of objectives and the raison d’ĂȘtre of the marketing concept ” [2].

Moreover, Jerome McCarthy and William Perrault, authors of “Marketing, Strategic Planning. From Theory to Practice”, say the marketing concept “implies that a company directs all its activities to satisfy their customers and in doing so makes a profit ” [3].

However, both authors caution that this concept is not new, however, there are still companies whose executives “behave as if they had been stuck in the times of the production era, during which there were shortages of almost all products ” . Therefore, in practice, “show little concern for the needs of their customers” , and this shows that “manufacturing make products easy and then try to sell customers thinking that exist for companies to have someone buy their products ” [3].

In that sense, McCarthy and Perrault added that the definition of the marketing concept “has three key ideas: 1) customer satisfaction (from the customer what they need), 2) the overall effort of the organization (all managers working in equipment) and 3) the benefit the objective (to satisfy the customers to continue voting with their money for survival and success of the company ” [3].
